HJ711 at the Yorkshire Air Museum

Mosquito HJ711 is owned by Tony Agar. Significant progress has been made on the aircraft since my first visit to the Yorkshire air Museum during the Summer of 1996. Thanks must go to Tony for allowing me to get so close to the aircraft - a lot of these pictures would not have been possible without his help.

HJ711 was on the flightline for the Yorkshire Air Show 2006 and caused something of a sensation! The first half of the photos for the 20th of August 2006 show HJ711 at the start of the air show, the second half show HJ711 being returned to the hangar at the end of the air show.

At the end of the air show, HJ711 was towed back to the hangar where she is normally displayed. HJ711 History

Built at Hatfield in May 1943, NF.II HJ711 was issued to 169 Squadron (code VI) at Little Snoring in Norfolk where it achieved the squadron's first victory, Squadron Leader J. A. H. Cooper shooting down a Bf 110 near Berlin. Following only 3 months service with the RAF however, HJ711 was struck off charge and virtually scrapped.

Tony Agar's involvement with HJ711 began on 29th April 1972 when he acquired the derelict cockpit section of HJ711, and other items including a rudder, at the sale of an aircraft collection at Blackpool.

Tony Agar visited the sites of several Mosquito wrecks in 1969 looking for small items he could exhibit, but following the acquisition of HJ711's cockpit section, Tony decided that he would build a complete Mosquito and travelled extensively collecting components. He recovered the best parts of a wing from B.XVI PF498/6607M, which had been used by the Civil Defence for crash rescue training at Chorley in Lancashire. Additional wing parts came from a long-derelict Royal Navy T.III, VA878, which had crash landed at St. David's airfield in South Wales. A pair of Merlin engines from NF.30, NT616, were recovered from a scrap yard at Cosford. The rear fuselage of RS715 was obtained from the MGM Studio store at Borehamwood, wing tips from Scotland and many other components from all over the country.

When the restoration project became too large for Tony's domestic garage in 1986, it was moved to The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington, just outside York.

Notes: HJ711 is noted in some sources as having served with Nos. 141 and 169 Squadrons, while in others as only having served with No. 169 Squadron, can anyone shed further light on the subject?
